I gotta tell you, it has been a week of celebration up here at Crown Yourself headquarters (and by that, I do mean my current, my bedroom/office.)
I was so honored when Dr. Ely Weinschneider, asked to interview me for his series for Ariana Huffington’s magazine, Thrive Global on...
Because let me tell you, this mompreneur thing ain’t easy.
You can have ease. But "ease" and "easy" are two completely different things.
"Ease" is a state of being. "Easy" refers to the load of action being performed.
Let’s break it down in NLP terms.
Ease is a noun, meaning it’s a state. And states, as you know, can change from moment to moment. If by “easy,” we’re talking about the sheer amount of load of work being performed...it’s a crap ton...literally. From dirty diapers to designing integrative intuitive strategies in our CRM, the workload is a lot.
It’s not necessarily that any task or project is particularly “hard” or “difficult.” It just is work. And there is a lot of it when you’re raising two "twins" -- a business and a baby, both in their toddler years.
Here’s the thing...
Any task or project that scares you…
And it doesn’t matter why it scares you…
It can be the amount of time you think it’s going to take.
It can be the amount of energy you think it’s going to take.
It can be the amount of sacrifice you think you’re going to have to make.
A lot of times, what you think it’s going to be, isn’t really the thing. But, if you think that any particular task is going to be complex, or take a lot of time, or take a lot of energy, or take a lot of sacrifice, what happens?
You put it off.
What makes it “hard” or “difficult” is your mindset and your attitude around it.
The more you procrastinate on doing the thing, it builds up what my mentor, Brendon Burchard, calls the “Relative Weight of Importance and Duration.”
It’s all relative. It’s NOT real.
Your subconscious mind cannot tell the difference between something that is vividly imagined and something that actually happens.
The more you think that thing is going to take a ton of time, the more time it takes you to do the thing because the time you spend delaying action is being added unconsciously to the amount of perceived time that you think the activity is going to take.
So, I know that you’ve got some thing on that to-do list that has been burning a hole in your brain for a long time.
Ever lit a piece of paper on fire before? If you light a match and place it in the center of a piece of paper, the initial hole that the fire creates is small. But, eventually the circle widens and widens and widens, until you have to drop the whole paper and let it be consumed by the flame.
The same is true for that thing that’s been on your to-do list for a while. So here's how to stop the burn, and start fanning that flame of success.
5 Steps to Stop Procrastinating and Do the Thing That Will Take You to Your Next Level...NOW.
No.1 Shit or Get off the Pot
Pardon my French, but either get it done or get it off your list. Dump it, if it’s not worth your time, or, more importantly, in alignment with where you want to be. Ask your Future Self, that amazing woman who has everything you desire - the house, the kids, the liquid assets, the bank account, the husband - if this is a task or project that will get you closer to being her and having all those things.
And it’s totally fine if your answer is the later.
It’s totally fine if you need to dump it. Forgive yourself. Release it. Because that only means that another better, more beautiful idea, task, or project will come in to fill its place that will be even more in alignment with where you want to go.
But, if it’s the former...if your Future Self is screaming at you, “Do this, get it done! This is going to serve you so freaking powerfully, then…
No.2 - Set the DEAD-line
This is not a fluid deadline. This is a DEAD-line. And here’s my interpretation of this word, in particular for projects or tasks that you have been procrastinating on: the project or task is DEAD if it has NOT crossed this line by this time.
Meaning, that you make a commitment to yourself to go ALL IN on this project or task. You give it all you got, because, if by Date X, you have not completed it, then it is done. Dead in the water.
Now, I do give a little bit of grace here.
Only if you are 80% done with the project or task or are 80% of your way to your goal by the deadline, then keep going and finish your freaking race.
But, if you are not 80% of the way done, then chuck it. Dump it. Do something else.
This way you’re not waiting another 18 years to finish writing the dang book, or launching that course, or starting that business, or getting that first coaching client.
You either get it done by this year, or you no longer allow yourself to even do it.
This is literally the strategy that I have had to put in place with myself for my own book.
My book, Mindful Meals: How to Dethrone Food Fears and Reign in a Body That Rules, has been burning a hole in my brain since 2015. That’s four f*ing years!! And when I realized this, I had my own CTJM (Come to Jesus Moment), of, "Holy shit! I need to practice what I preach."
So, I decided in December 2018, that if by this time the following year (so December 2019) this book wasn’t out, available to the public for all to behold, and I was already writing the next one, then I would kill the project and that dream.
I am proud to say that I am now 80% done with writing it. And will be releasing it by summer 2019. Perfectly polished, turd or not.
You read it here first! Hold me accountable, please.
No.3 - Track Your Time
You already know that your mind can play games with you about how long or short it thinks a task is going to take. Ever go out for a night with your girlfriends, and you’re like “OMG time just flew!”
Time is a matter of perception. So you’ve got to clear out any crappy perception for how long something is actually going to take versus what you think it’s going to take.
For this, I use an app called Toggl. You can get it for free here. I categorize all my projects (in typical Virgo fashion) by color and task being performed on those projects. And then I track it.
I am not an affiliate of this app, I just recommend it avidly to anyone who needs more clarity on their actual productivity, versus doing all the things that they think they are being productive in. By having this app tracking my time in the background of my life, I unconsciously prevent from getting distracted on something else without consciously resetting the timer to that new activity.
No.4 - The Sound, Speed, Annnnd...ACTION! Rule
In Hollywood, before you film a scene, the director shouts out “Sound, speed, and...ACTION!” And whether you are ready or not, you have to perform. You have to trust your gut that you have done all the preparation, and that everything in your life, and everything you’ve learned has led you to this moment.
You press the send button that that email. You push the record button on that livestream. You press the “submit” program on that investment in that new coach you’ve been wanting to work with. You trust your gut and you do the thing.
Then you figure it out in the moment, of the scene. Because that is where the magic happens. Moment to moment, in a place of pure trust that anything that comes up will be exactly what is perfect and what needs to come up for the next moment.
It is in this place of Divine trust that ease comes in, centeredness, alignment. It’s the delicious dance between you and the Universe manifesting in perfect timing the life of your highest, best, Future Self.
No.5 - Celebrate the Journey
So often, especially as women, we anchor in our failures and all the things we didn’t get done, versus all the things we did get done that day. Let’s shift that, shall we?
At the end of the day, everyday, no matter how much or how little progress you made that day toward your goal, write down in your journal or in your notes app on your phone at least 3 things you accomplished that day that moved you in that direction.
Got it? Good.
Today, I challenge you to take that next step. To do that thing that you have been putting off. To shit or get off the pot.
So, tell me, what is that THING you've been putting off doing?
I am celebrating you and cheering you on the whole way and I look forward to celebrating your "DONE" moment, when that THING is off your to-do list, and onto your To-DONE list.
And if you would like even more clarity on support to stop procrastinating and to move that thing from To-Do to To-Done, then click here to book a 20-minute 1:1 chat with me here.I’ll give you a free, personalized Queen-B Productivity Plan, so you get that THING done in the next three months.
