Hi, I’m Kimberly Spencer, and I’ve been addicted to doing.
I’m a do-er.
Most of the people I work with are do-ers. In fact, it’s hard to get us to NOT do. There is always something to do. A neverending to-do list of “shoulds” and “supposed to’s.”
Can we possibly push ourselves farther, longer, harder, to that edge, and maybe even a little past it that feels like our breaking point?
Probably.
Eventually, though, doing replaces who we be.
When you become the do-er, you become the taskmaster of your soul, instead of allowing your Sovereign Self to shine.
Doing becomes a distraction.
Doing can even become an addiction.
Addicted to the rush of having so much on your plate.
Addicted to the feelings of overwhelm.
Addicted to always have more to do. MORE! MORE!
That’s what we’re made for, right? More. Rachel Hollis says so.
High achievers with big goals, big dreams, and lots to DO to achieve those dreams are particularly susceptible to this addiction.
Society has even praised doing, doing, doing.
5 AM club. Hustle harder. Do more!
But in ALL this doing, what are we actually DOING?
It starts focusing on the EXTERNAL - the doing.
Instead of what’s in your Soul.
What’s really tugging on you to heal, to feel, to BECOME.
The shadows.
The inner child.
The Future You.
All the repressed bits of FEELING that are shoved down and suppressed, repressed and escaped from the bulimia of DOING.
Doing something to “control” what you feel.
Doing something so you can feel “safe” from having to feel.
Doing something to get acknowledgment, praise, VALIDATION! Instead of - gasp! - having to actually BE with who you are.
It’s a radically uncomfortable spot to sit in.
I’ve sat in it many times over the years in different forms.
Through physical bulimia, financial bulimia, and business bulimia, this escapism into trying to shove more DOING down my throat, wallet, and business, so I could FEEL less crappy about who I BE.
I didn’t want to feel.
Because truth be told, I was scared of how BIG my feelings were.
I was scared they would consume me if I really sat and acknowledged who I was BEING and what I was FEELING.
And I didn’t really like who I BE back then.
I didn’t like FEELING like a fraud.
I didn’t like FEELING like I could be rejected.
I didn’t like FEELING my own judgments about myself.
Yet, as my mentor Giten’s book states, you gotta FEEL it to HEAL IT.
And when you’re not used to FEELING, it can feel fucking frightening to start.
Yet, it is through looking at these pieces of your soul, these fragments of feeling that stop the cycle of vomiting up do-do-do everywhere, and instead allow you to BE.
BE with yourself.
BE your most authentic self.
BE truthful.
BE loving.
BE compassionate.
You see…
Most people DO compassion. They show it to others, but they don’t live it themselves.
Most people DO truth - they speak with integrity to others, all while denying their soul under the myths and lies of “I’m fine.”
Most people DO love - showing it to others, but not filling their cup for themselves.
That’s DOING at the expense of who you BE. Because it’s not aligned. It’s not congruent with who you are BEING.
The Golden Rule goes both ways, my friend.
But, when you flip the script…
You DO from the place of who you BE, that’s alignment, baby!
Stop distracting yourself with more DOING and challenge yourself to sit and be still with who you be.
Experience what FEELINGS come up.
When I first did this, I could barely sit still, was MASSIVELY uncomfortable, and felt like I wanted to run away from myself as fast as possible.
Stay.
Choose to press pause.
Align.
Deepen.
Reach in.
What are you running from? What are you trying to control, suppress, repress or hide from?
And know, you are safe.
Breathe.
Stay.
Ask again.
Keep going deeper with who you be.
Choose stillness.
Choose peace.
Choose to NOT do.
Choose to BE.
I promise you this -
BEING does not eliminate DOING.
It aligns it.
It just will be aligned, on purpose, and from a place of peace and fulfillment instead of distraction, chaos, and overwhelm.
