I’ve been talking with my clients A LOT about values. How values impact your emotions, productivity, who you hire, what you spend your time doing.
Just today in our Mindful Monarchs group coaching call, I worked with one of our Mindful Monarchs through an emotional struggle that she was having. Why was she feeling frustrated, sad, and #allthefeels?
Because her VALUES were being challenged by her team.
I remember when I was in my NLP coaching certification program back in 2016 and my coaches suggested to the class putting HEALTH as your top value.
For years, and I mean, for a LOT of years, FREEDOM was one of my highest values. Ever since I recovered from bulimia back when I was 22, health has always been up there in my top 5 values, but I’ve never put it right at the top.
Honestly, it’s because I was scared to.
In my bulimic days, I used to obsess over “healthy” foods in terms of weight loss. I created all these complicated rules around my eating in a reward-punishment formula that sent me into a 10-year spiral of guilt, shame, and food fears.
Eventually, freedom from that disease became higher on my values list.
Here’s the thing when you raise up a value though…
EVERY area in your life from your finances to your relationships gets aligned with that value.
With FREEDOM as my primary value, I was able to...
Be freely me in my marriage, in an open, honest, authentic relationship with a foundation in courage and candor.
Created a business where I’m not bound to a location (or an office..thank God!)
Can (and do) literally live anywhere there is wifi.
Liberate my mindset from my crappy broken programming.
...That VALUE took me really freaking far.
But what if we played with putting HEALTH as the primary value and FREEDOM took shotgun?
You see…
If you have HEALTH as your top value, you naturally wake up to go to the gym - it’s just who you are. It’s not something that you even have to think about or fight yourself to do. You just do it.
It’s who you are.
If you have HEALTH as your primary value, you won’t eat that ice cream in the fridge, you don’t even want to (shocker...I know.) You naturally go for the fresh fruit instead. The ice cream may come into your awareness, you may even have a few bites, but it’s not tormenting you by being in your house.
If you have HEALTH as your primary value, you won’t pull that all-nighter because you procrastinated the week before on getting that project done. You’ll just do it because you value your longevity...and therefore, your sleep.
If you have HEALTH as your primary value, you’ll invest in your health, buying wholesome organic produce, or in a functional medicine doctor, or in a whole bunch of tests to ensure you’re putting food that works with your individual body in your body.
The problem is, more often than not, we think that change is just about DOING something different.
It’s not about hiring a functional medicine doctor or a health coach.
It’s not about sleeping 8-hours.
It’s not about going to the gym on a regular basis.
Well, it is, and it isn’t.
Without changing who you are BEING, your IDENTITY, who you are at your CORE LEVEL, you can change your habits…
But you might find yourself winding up in February with all the other new year’s resolutions waiting till 2022 to actually make some real change again...or June...you know, for beach body season.
The real question is...
Who do you have to BE to make prioritizing your health as natural as breathing?
I am so excited to be addressing the MINDSET of change in my friend Ali Greenman’s Get Fit, Feel Fabulous free online event.
