I was watching a documentary on Freud as I had my lunch. It was a day when Decky was in Pre-K and Spike was at the gym, so I could watch what others would call in my house “boring docuseries” or things that aren’t really appropriate for a three-year-old.
Freud’s influence on modern culture is undeniable - from how we think about sex to how we think about ourselves.
And while I’m more of a Jungian gal myself, when you think of psychoanalysis, it’s Freud who culturally first comes to mind.
But, on the show, it was hypothesized Freud’s work was in part the catalyst to spark our current culture of narcissism filled with selfies, look-at-me-posting, and pictures of lunches.
As someone who uses selfies in much of my work and my business, and who shares regularly, openly about my life...
It got me thinking...
What makes a personal brand (aka a business) different than a narcissist?
And suddenly, it became very clear.
Again, as always, it comes down to the mindset - the intent behind the action or the habit, the BELIEF you have that is sparking or inspiring the action.
After all, not all selfie-postings are created equal.
All businesses have ONE thing in common -
Business solves a problem.
Maybe it’s a problem with your customer not feeling loved and you provide a dating service.
Maybe it’s a problem with your customer not feeling warm so you provide hand-knit scarves.
Maybe it’s a problem with your customer not feeling aligned and connected to purpose and you provide coaching.
Maybe it’s a problem with your customer not having electricity in your home, and you provide electrical wiring.
Problems can be physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, interpersonal, tactile, financial, fashionable.
Problems come in all shapes and sizes.
When you focus on solving a problem, you are serving instead of showing off.
If a person is struggling to believe that they can manifest their dream life, and you post selfies of the awesome dream life you worked your ass off to create - then is that selfish or is being of service?
If someone is struggling in their marriage and you share kissy photos of you and your partner - is that selfish or is that being of service?
Like Wonder Woman says, “It's about what you believe. And I believe in love.”
Love serves.
Love uplifts.
Love champions.
Love empowers.
Love gives hope.
Some people could perceive that sharing about your million-dollar launch, or showing your dream car to the world is being a “show off.” Is it?
Or are you inspiring others with what’s possible?
Or are you LEADING by example?
Or are you showing the LOVE of God working through you?
I was on a call with one of my clients. She shared with me her secret dream.
“It’s so selfish. It doesn’t even feel like me,” she told me. I could feel it was a big one coming.
“Well...what is it?”
“Well, I saw this beautiful Audi R8. I mean, I’m not even a car person, but that car, was just,” she paused inhaling the luxury, “beautiful. I saw it and it made me feel like a Queen.”
“Amazing!” She wouldn’t be the first of my clients to buy a $100K car, claiming her Divine right to prosperity, declaring to the pavement that a SOVEREIGN was riding properly in her carriage.
“But that’s so materialistic, isn’t it?”
“Is it?” I asked her.
“I don’t know. I mean, it’s just a car. And I’ve got one that works just fine?”
Why would you want to limit anything good growing?
When you carry around that Louis Vuitton, what if you’re inspiring people of what’s possible?
Here’s the thing…
Your life is a testimony to what is possible.
Is it possible for you to be an asshole and drive a fancy car and to continue to perpetuate the perceptions that rich people are assholess? Sure.
That’s pride and ego, then.
Or you can do this from a place of acceptance and love.
Money ENHANCES who you are.
So you drive down the road in your fancy car or strutting down the street with your Louis Vuitton, can be an act of consciousness IF...
You are doing it from the vibration, from the ENERGY of...
COURAGE
ACCEPTANCE
JOY
LOVE
PEACE
When you DO that you are being of service to the world.
So, I asked my client, “How could that Audi R8 be a testimony for others, for what’s possible?”
“I never thought about it that way,” she said.
“That’s the power of coaching,” I said with a wink.
“Well, I guess, if someone asked me about it, I’d be able to share my faith with them. I would be able to share with them how my values of a can-do attitude and personal development have served me to grow my business. I would encourage them that they can own a business and grow to a million dollars too.”
EXACTLY.
“And, aside from all that,” I joked because I couldn’t just leave it there. As a coach, it’s my JOB to constantly take my client’s imagination, belief, certainty, and perception to the next level, “How is you getting what you desire - that car - of service to humanity?”
She paused. “Help me out here.”
“What about the car salesman who sells you the car? Aren’t you helping him put food on the table for his family with his commission? What about the dealership? Aren’t you helping them build more business and serve all their hundreds of employees with your purchase? What else…”
Once we got on a roll with all the ways that her purchase would serve humanity, she concluded that it would be both irresponsible and massively selfish for her to NOT get the car she desired.
It comes down to what you believe.
It’s an intention.
Is it to serve or show off? You tell me.
How can you make your success an act of service and share it as such?
