So you say you want freedom?
“Do you fling yourself off a cliff and expect to fly to Hawaii?” I asked my client.
She stared at me perplexedly, “Um...no...I would die.”
“Exactly!” I exclaimed.
You see...
Having worked with 5,6, and 7-figure entrepreneurs for the past 4 years, and having been an entrepreneur for the past 12 years, I’ve found the number one reason why people start their own businesses - freedom.
Hey, it was my reason too.
So the entrepreneur flings herself off the cliff with the Braveheart-worthy battle cry of FREEEEEEEEEEDOM into the wide world of entrepreneurship, expecting just that…
Only to be surprised by the crash landing on the rocks below.
So she picks herself up, wringing her hands through her hair as to “why God, why” is she not feeling even a smidge free.
Why does everyone else on Instagram seem to be doing sooooo much better than me?
Why is so and so-and-so so much more successful?
And then, the idea dawns...
She picks herself back up off that rock of failed attempts to climb back up the cliff gathering materials, resources, gadgets, software, and the latest “things” that “of course” her business needs to fly because some “guru” said that’s what did it for her.
She finds business tactics - summits, landing pages, webinars, chatbots, Facebook groups, podcasts, memberships, posting 3x a day on social media. She even goes so far as to VA. Oooooh.
These tactics are like the nuts and the bolts and the parts of a plane and a VA is like some handyman you picked up outside Home Depot to help you build something - it’s a hope and a prayer at best that she can scrap together with enough willpower, tenacity, and Google vids to build the business that will fly her to their destination.
Sound familiar?
She DYI’s a kite or a paraglider, strap herself to it, wave au revoir to their Home Depot VA (who doesn’t even speak French), and flings herself again off the cliff toward freedom!
Maybe for a moment, she catches a breeze - a sale! a whiff of wind in her sails to carry her a little farther beyond the flat rock of failed attempts. Yet still, she plummets into the ocean.
Instead of enjoying the cool waves wash over her, she’s now drowning in overwhelm, trying to figure out how to get this goddang para-winged thing off of her, fearing swimming to shore to scrap together the pieces to give it a go again.
IT’S NOT HER BELIEF IN FREEDOM THAT IS THE PROBLEM, IT’S THE STRUCTURE SHE’S BUILT TO GET HER TO HER DESTINATION.
They flung themselves off the cliff of entrepreneurship, forgetting to build the plane on the way down.
Relate much?
Processes are your plane.
Relationships guide your direction.
KPI’s are your dashboard and metrics that make sure you’re staying on track.
Your team is your crew, the pilot, the ground control to Major Tom that you need to get you safely landing every time to where you want to be, Pina Colada in hand.
And sales...well, cue Bette Midler, because sales are the wind beneath your wins, baby!
