The 4 Mindset Differences Between 5 and 6-Figure Business Owners

When I first started teaching Pilates back when I was still bulimic, I worked with hundreds of bodies and I saw that it didn’t matter whether you were technically fat or technically thin, whether you worked out 5 days a week or once a month, or whether you ate healthily or you didn’t…

WHAT MATTERED WAS HOW YOU THOUGHT ABOUT YOUR BODY - THE STORY THAT YOU TOLD YOURSELF ABOUT WHY YOU HAD OR DIDN’T HAVE THE RESULTS YOU WANTED. 

Now, as a business owner, I see the exact same pattern with the leaders I work with and the results (aka income) they’re bringing in.

IT’S ABOUT THE STORY YOU’RE TELLING YOURSELF ABOUT WHY YOU HAVE OR DON’T HAVE THE RESULTS YOU WANT. 

Why is it that most small businesses fail in the first 3 years? It comes down to one thing - the mindset of the leader. And that ripples into the skillsets they acquire, the systems they put into place, how they show up, how they message, and how confident they are with selling.

I was having a conversation with another 6-figure business owner about the leap between 5 and 6 figures because when I was making it, it didn’t seem like a big deal. But then I realized, that’s exactly why. 

So, here’s what I’ve noticed are the BIGGEST differences between those businesses who make 5-figures and those who make 6-figures. 

NO.1 - SMALL VS. BIG

5-Figure business owners tend to start small. They build a small course, a small book, a small offer. They have small coaching prices. You’ll find that they will do a lot of things also for the VERY SMALL price of...FREE. 

THIS COMES DOWN TO MINDSET AND CONFIDENCE: THEY DON’T YET BELIEVE THEY CAN CHARGE THE BIG PRICES FOR WHAT THEY ARE SELLING. 

The 6-Figure business owners start big. They start with higher ticket offers and then once they have hit an income they like - you know, like 6-figures - THEN they pepper in smaller offers to serve and impact more. 

NO.2 - IMPACT VS. SALES

5-figure business owners focus more on being liked. Sometimes they’ll have more followers, more subscribers to their podcast, do more content production, do tons more stuff, again, for FREE, but not really having it lead anywhere. But they are suffering on the profit side, which is why they’re stuck. 

IT’S SAFE TO OFFER FREE THINGS. EVERYONE LIKES FREE SH*T, BUT NOT EVERYONE VALUES IT. 

6-Figure business owners focus more on selling first and selling A LOT. In fact, odds are they are selling regularly, you’re used to them selling. It’s not that it’s sleazy or anything, but they are fervent about actually growing their business, and they treat it accordingly.

Their audience may be smaller, but it's a far more VALUABLE audience.

NO.3 - BUSY VS. PRODUCTIVE

5 Figure business owners tend to brag about how busy they are. They will want to show you their fully booked calendar (that’s normally booked with doing a lot of FREE stuff...see no.2), but nothing that really moves the needle profit-wise. 

6 figure business owners put their heads down and just do the freaking work that brings in more sales (and usually have more time for hot baths). They work smarter, not harder, and they certainly don’t put their pride in being busy.

Give them a 35-hour workweek and they will get more done and make MORE money in their business. 

NO.4 - NO TEAM VS. TEAM

5-Figure business owners tend to be going at it solo. Now, I’m not saying you can’t build to 6-figures solo, you totally can. What I am saying is that 5-figure business owners take PRIDE in doing it solo, They struggle to delegate. They tend to be control freaks. How do I know? I was one of them. And it sucked. It was hard and I was spending so much of my time doing things that are not in my genius zone.

6-figure business owners have a team. It’s not much. Maybe it’s a freelancer or a VA. You really don’t need a full-time employee until you’re at least at the half a million mark. But it goes back to them being productive vs. busy - they know the work that moves the needle AND they know the work that is not in their genius zone that does move the needle that can easily be delegated to someone else. They’re able to surrender control on the things that are not in their genius zone so that they can have the FREEDOM to do what is.
