Think your customers can’t pay when in crisis?

“It feels wrong to charge money for my work right now,” my client said to me, trying to convince me of her position. 

If you ever want to see my enneagram-8 coach-mode come out, say something like this in a session with me, and I’m more than happy to go there. (It’s why my clients pay me.)

“Let me ask you this, in a couple of weeks, do you think this situation will get better or worse?”

She paused for a moment, “Worse.”

“SO WHAT WILL BE YOUR EXCUSE THEN ABOUT WHY YOU’RE NOT CHARGING FOR YOUR SERVICES?”

I guarantee you, Walmart, Amazon, CVS, and every other big business out there is still charging for their products and services. In fact, the world’s top billionaires have grown their net worth by billions…why? They kept selling. They’re not judging their customers who are buying toilet paper and food when their customer throws in an “unnecessary” mascara or a face mask or a gossip magazine either. 

IT’S NOT YOUR JOB TO DECIDE WHETHER THEY CAN OR CANNOT “AFFORD” YOUR PRODUCTS AND SERVICES.

And it is certainly not your job to dictate how or if they “should” spend money on your products and services. 

Who died and made you controller of everyone else’s lives?

How dare you judge your customers. 

You are Queen of YOUR life, not theirs. 

IT’S YOUR JOB AS THE BUSINESS OWNER AND AS A DRIVER OF OUR WORLD’S ECONOMY TO MAINTAIN THE FINANCIAL HEALTH OF THE WORLD AND SELL YOUR SERVICES.

If someone buys a ticket to your kingdom (aka your biz) that’s THEIR choice.

If you’re not out there selling your products and services, you are limiting your customer’s choices. You’re not only doing yourself a MASSIVE disservice, but you’re also doing them a MASSIVE disservice.

Your products and services give people the opportunity of feeling something different than fear during this time of crisis. 

I don’t care whether you’re selling a $2000 certification program or a $15 hand-knit scarf.

This is where you best know what business you’re really in.

People are buying a feeling. Interacting with your business, buying your products and services provides people with a very specific feeling.

WHAT IS THE FEELING PEOPLE ARE BUYING FROM YOU?

Maybe it’s a feeling of achievement…

Or joy…

Or beauty…

Or love…

Or transformation…

Or accomplishment…

Or hope...

Or pride…

Or courage…

Or adventure…

IF YOU’RE HIDING BEHIND YOUR CLOAK OF FEAR AND GUILT AS A BUSINESS OWNER, NOT CHARGING FOR YOUR PRODUCTS AND SERVICES, YOU HAVEN’T GOT THE FIRST CLUE WHAT BUSINESS IS. 

And worse, you’re adding to the problem instead of being part of the solution.

Every business is built to provide a solution to a problem.

And right now, more than ever, there’s a lot of problems.

People not feeling connected. 

People losing jobs and their sense of security.

People getting sick.

People feeling alone...and literally being alone.

People don’t know what to do with themselves.

People feel lost and hopeless.

People losing their businesses because they didn’t have a clear vision of how to innovate and pivot.

If you want to be the solution, know the business you’re REALLY in.

Here’s a question I’ve been asking my private clients a lot lately...

WHY ARE YOUR PRODUCTS AND SERVICES MORE NECESSARY NOW THAN EVER? 

Maybe your skincare products make that middle-aged woman in Iowa with three kids, who haven’t changed out of her pajamas for a week, feel sexy when she showers. 

Maybe your estate management services make that restauranteur who got sick and just had to close his business feel secure because he knows that even if something happens to him, his family is going to be taken care of.

Maybe your online coffee chats for artist events, make that single, struggling actress, who’s stuck in a studio apartment with just her cat Mozy, feel like she can still network during this time of social distancing so that her career doesn’t completely stagnate.

WHATEVER IT IS, YOU, AS A BUSINESS OWNER, YOU PROVIDE SOLUTIONS TO SERVE PEOPLE. 

THEY WON’T HAVE THESE SOLUTIONS IF YOU’RE NOT SELLING...OR IF YOU GO OUT OF BUSINESS TOO.

It’s your responsibility to be out there, selling your products and services. 

You are the backbone of the economy. 

The economy is the movement of money - the energy of money flowing to and from. 

You are responsible for the ebb and flow of money - by selling your are allowing for the economy to keep on ebbing and by your customers, you’re allowing for flow by your customer’s buying.

Keep selling.

Keep adding value.

Keep doing more for your customers to serve them with solutions to their problems.

Love them, instead of judging them.

SERVE THEM, INSTEAD OF HOLDING THEM BACK.

Remember, your reign is now.
