You learned some things along the way.
And, wo-man-o-man, how those lessons will serve in this decade to come.
Take a deep breath and release.
2020 was challenging. And with challenging years, like with challenging workouts, your body needs space to rest and recuperate.
Give yourself the gentle touch of rest.
Grace your body, your mind, your soul with a break.
Here’s the thing…
2020 was a year of MASSIVE sympathetic activation.
In your body, you have two parts of your nervous system: the sympathetic and the parasympathetic.
Your sympathetic nervous system is your fight or flight.
And personally, this system has got a bit of a bad rap, because we hear all the horrors of chronic stress and anxiety, and feel like you’re on the fringe of things.
That just means your sympathetic is a wee bit over-stimulated.
You NEED fight or flight for short-term success.
To successfully dodge a speeding car, that’s your sympathetic nervous system at work. You’re welcome.
To successfully kick the ball in a soccer match and score the winning goal, that’s your sympathetic nervous system at work. Huzzah!
To successfully summon the courage to deliver that masterclass or close that sale, that’s your sympathetic nervous system at work...along with your courage muscle. 💪🏼
The sympathetic nervous system just gets a little frayed when it’s constantly being programming with all the things that are going wrong with the world - and there were a lot in 2020.
Your sympathetic nervous system is necessary to be on alert to danger. That’s a good thing!
Think of it like, your body’s internal fire alarm system.
You want it to go off when your curtains are on fire and your living room is engulfed in flames.
You DON’T want it going off just because you lit a candle. (Imagine how annoying that would be!)
That’s what 2020 was like for many of us - our alarm system going off - screaming DANGER!
When, in many cases, it wasn’t REALLY a full-on inferno that you needed an entire fire department to rescue you from, you just needed to blow out a candle.
But when your internal alarm system is going off at the slightest hint of a fire - even if it’s one you’ve lit on your stove to cook a meal (aka create anything new in your life and business), it can throw off your body.
So if you’re feeling tired, or unmotivated, like you just want to sleep or nap for a decade, you’re not alone.
It’s your body saying its other nervous system - the parasympathetic needs to get to work.
Your parasympathetic nervous system is your rest and digest nervous system.
Your body is built to oscillate between the two.
Stress (aka fight/flight) and rest (aka parasympathetic).
You NEED stress to grow.
You NEED rest to grow too.
Trouble is when your internal alarm system has been malfunctioning, screaming STRESS! FIRE! DANGER! At every turn...your parasympathetic (aka the sprinkler + oxygen systems) doesn’t know when to turn on.
The good news is, you have the power to rewire your internal alarm system.
In today’s world where it seems like there are fires everywhere, the parasympathetic nervous system needs to be trained to activate.
Sometimes this means having a mind “mechanic” come in to help tweak a tweaked system.
You can have one who works from the top-down, like a coach or a therapist.
Or you can have one who works more somatically, from the body up, like a personal trainer, Pilates instructor, or breathwork instructor.
You just have to consciously TRAIN the parasympathetic nervous system to shut down the fire alarms.
This can be done with Pilates, yoga, breathwork, Qi Jong, Tai Chi, reiki - all of which we are bringing to our Mindful Monarchs Membership in the upcoming months.
For me, personally, Pilates has been my favorite way to reprogram my parasympathetic nervous system, to recondition and re-train my body back into a state of balance between stress and rest.
